The wheel of life is believed to be created by Buddha’s disciple Mongulyana using his magical power. It is the oldest iconography in Buddhism history and is the only mandala that has to be explained from inside to outside. The main objective of this painting is to teach a lesson and to follow the right path. In the centre, there are three poisons that include ignorance, greed and anger which are all the main sources of sufferings. The three poisons are represented by three animals. In the next layer, there are two paths – the dark path and bliss path. Next, there are six different realms (God realms, Demi god realm, Human realm, Animal realm, Hungry ghost realm and Hell realm) where the suffering is common in all the realms. However, human realm is considered as the best because it is the only realm that has a chance to liberate away from the suffering world. In the outer regions, there are 12 karmic links which all show about impermanent of the life. Finally, the wheel of life was held by Yama – God of the Death, which firmly implies that if the right path is not followed, destruction will result.
