Mandala literally means a ‘circle’ as this iconography will be always in circular in design. It is a complex representation of the universe, with different parts of the universe representing different aspects of the Buddhist teachings. A variety of mandalas exist, and they are often recreated through paintings, 3-D models, and powdered sand. Mandala is originated from India thousands of years ago as an aid for certain advanced Hindu and Buddhist meditation practices and have today entered the public in 20th century. Mandalas are used in many types of Buddhist meditation and practice. As we have seen, mandalas are used in various Buddhist practices to represent not just the universe, but also the numerous facets of the Buddhist path. The different types of mandalas are general mandala, cosmic mandala, mantra mandala, Kalachakra mandala, Buddha mandala and mandala of the Bodhisattava.
