1:Vairochana whose name means Radiant is the patron of the Gelugpas. As such, he will occupy a central position. His method overcomes ignorance or delusion. His vehicle is the lion, symbol of the royal lineage of Shakyamuni and the superiority of the Buddha dharma as a method. This is the Buddha as Teacher; he makes the turning wheel gesture (dharmachakra mudra) which evokes his sermons and his setting in motion the system compatible with the wheel of rebirth. Om is the syllable associated with him. He heads the Buddha family.

Five Dyni are the antidote for five poisons, that are anger, ignorance, greed, jealousy and pride. The five Dyni Buddhas are:

  1. Vairochana/Nampar Nangdze whose name means ‘Radiant’ and it’s the patron of the gelugpas. As such, he occupies a central position. Otherwise, like the rising sun that illuminates darkness, he is considered to occupy the East and his colour is white. He stands for wisdom in the form of understanding. His method overcomes ignorance or delusion and his vehicle is the lion. His hand gesture was the turning wheel of dharma (Dharmachakra mudra).
  2. Amoghasiddhi/Donyo Drupa: He is in dark green colour and is associated with the North. His practices overcome the envy and jealousy. He is also associated with the air and with our attitudes of mind. His symbol is a cross formed by two Vajras and his seat is supported by Garuda. With his right hand, he makes the gesture “Do not fear (Abhaya mudra”) – a sign of complete refuge or protection.
  3. Buddha Amitabha/Yoepame: The Western paradise of Amitabha is called Sukha-yati n sanskrit or blissful land. Buddha Amitabha is also referred as the mother of all Buddha. His hand gesture will be in the meditation posture and sometimes holding a lotus.
  4. Ratnasambhava/Rinchen Jungne: He is associated with the South and is in golden colour, which is related to earth element. His attribute is a wish fulfilling jewel. He helps to overcome craving and greed. Ratnasambhava’s throne is supported by horses. Practices associated with him work to transmute the position of pride.
  5. Ashobya/Mithrugpa: He is the historical Buddha that is seen as only one manifestation in a chain or series, a nirmakaya form of one or other of the transcendent ones. Buddhists of the Kagyu denomination consider that the very dark blue buddha position is in the East. He depicts touching the earth (bhumispara mudra) with his right hand in testimony to the power of merit in overcoming opposition.
